SVA iXD Masters Program Open House

Blog

I look at blogging as my tool to look below the surface. The tech field is moving so fast and so furiously that you can spend all your energy just trying to keep up. Instead, I’m stepping back and refocusing on what I find interesting and enriching as a designer.

SVA iXD Masters Program Open House

Angelika Fuellemann

This past November, I went to the iXD Masters Program Open House at SVA. I was contemplating grad school and was curious to see how one of the preeminent design schools is responding to the hyper changing world of technology.

“Design used to write the story so the world might see the future. Today, interaction designers are writing the story so the world can participate in it.”
– Excerpt from SVA iXD Mission Page

It was great to chat with the students and hear their stories. There was a mix of architects, photographers and designers. One theme that ran through was Designer as Entrepreneur. A student mentioned that he was required to use Kickstarter to fund his design project. Another expressed frustration that whatever idea she had, it had already been conceived by another.

Walking around the studio spaces, I came across a nook that housed the studio’s library. I took a few moments to check the spines. I was happy to see I had some of these books in my own home library, like Designing Together and Thinking with Type. I took photos to be able to go over the titles later. I knew I was looking at a selection of books curated by the best of the best in the industry.

I grouped the books into 5 major categories, with design and business being the largest. I also set up a handy-dandy, shared Amazon Wish List comprised of most of the titles.
